Even southerners are complaining about the heat. And southerners are no wimps when it comes to enduring high temperatures. This summer, already in its early beginnings, has us done for, I'm afraid. No more strolls, no more joy-riding, no more hanging out on the front porch. Show me to the nearest AC unit blowing full blast and set at 70 degrees. The only benefit to this life sucking heat is that line drying laundry is a total breeze. It's truthfully faster than a dryer. Honestly.
Usually, my cure for heat exhaustion is plenty of swimming in Austin's cold water pools. My favorites are
Deep Eddy and Shipe. This year, with a wee one in tote, I'm a bit more limited as she is not as durable as I am. Now, I have to plan much more about when to head off to the pool. I can't just take a dip any time I feel like it. There's naps, feedings, potential heat exhaustion from too much midday running around, and wading pool times to consider.
However, yesterday, I got myself in gear and the swim bag packed the night before. We were ready to head out before mid-day. We found a shady spot under an old sycamore tree. We spread out the towel and the quilt. We applied sunscreen. We walked over to the ladder. We climbed down carefully and finally we came into contact with cool, refreshing water. Beatrix was a little surprised by the sensation of the cool temps, but seem to enjoy. No crying. We swayed and twirled through the three feet of bliss, happy to escape the dreary indoors if only for an hour. With mixed signals of possible impeding hunger and digestive activity (ehem), we climbed out of the pool. Nothing beats drying off with the help of a warm (hot) summertime breeze. We will definitely repeat our outing again soon.
