What a wonderfully cool spring morning we had today. Bea and I thought it would be nice to begin our relaxed Saturday morning with some bread baking. We gathered all of the ingredients, started our yeast (no backing out now), then realized we were out of butter. Realizing that you are out of butter at the exact moment that you need butter is akin to waking up and discovering that you are out of coffee. Ouch! Then I remembered the heavy whipping cream I bought a few days ago to make butter with Bea. She LOVES butter and can eat it by the tablespoon. (I try to explain to her that her great butter consumption won't always be possible). But she only smiles and says, "I wwwooovvveee butter, mommy!" I know, so do I.
So we shook and shook. We all took turns. I explained that when you shake and stir milk for a long time it turns to butter. She was delighted with the outcome! Within 10 minutes we had just enough butter for our bread recipe.
Bea kneaded (ate off of her) her little loaf and I kneaded (threw into the Kitchenaid mixer) my great, big piece.
Later on that afternoon, she awoke to the aroma of fresh bread wafting through the rooms of our home. We ate her little roll with mozzarella for snack.
I do hope these memories and scents resonate with her always. I can only dream that when she's all grown up the smell of bread baking will take her back, in some intangible manner, to her youngest years - full of innocence, joy, and tenderness.
When she and daddy went to the grocery store later that day, she reminded daddy several times that we needed milk (because we always do) - and butter.
I hope you are having a delightful weekend!
xo,
Nichole
don't you love making those kind of sensory/tactile memories with her? and yes, we're all about butter in this house too :)
