Bea and I spent the afternoon at the pool today. When we arrived, we overheard a mother and little boy having a discussion over cookies. More specifically, the corner bakery's cookies. Bea and I exchanged glances and I knew what was coming next. "I wove cookies too Mama!" she proclaimed. Indeed, I stand with her on that one. Me and my undisciplined sweet tooth.
The whole time we were at the pool, Bea walking on her knees and me walking on my hands (we hang in the baby section which tops out at 2 feet...) I kept thinking about the bakery: cookies, cupcakes, brownies, oh my. There was no predicting which one would win me over. Admittedly, I felt vulnerable to all. "Hey Bea, don't you think today would be a nice day to have a little treat after we swim?" I asked. "A treat! I want a cookie!" Ah...every once in a while the little one and I are truly in sync. This was one of those moments. I couldn't wait for Bea to proclaim that she'd had enough of water play.
We dried off and made our way to the bakery. We settled on a chocolate cupcake with pink buttercream icing and hibiscus tea. It was delicious. As we were sitting there, chatting and enjoying our treat, Bea pointed up into the corner and mentioned that there was a bird - a baby bird. I looked, but the after-swim cupcake - ice tea treat had me in a fog and so I mindlessly corrected her assuming that she was noticing something else besides a bird. I could hear and see no bird as far as my dull senses were concerned. She insisted that she was not making up a story. There was a mama bird and a baby bird. I looked again, this time more carefully, and sure enough, Bea was right on, as usual. Outside the bakery window resting atop one of the eaves was a nest with a baby bird chirping for his mama. Every few minutes the mama would return with a "treat" for her little one. It was so sweet. Soon all of the other customers around us were witnessing what Bea brought to our attention. And for a few moments, attention was diverted from laptops to a baby bird chirping innocently in her nest.
We eventually migrated to a table outside so that we could get a better view. What an inspiring and humbling sight. This mama bird was working so very hard under such harsh hot and dry conditions all in the name of her baby's survival. What a mother won't do...Though sad to think of, I'm sure this mother bird's needs were considerable as she sacrificed for her offspring.
And so my friends, that was our big adventure for the day. Totally unexpected, but so totally perfect and enjoyable. Our little moment of awe.
What a beautiful story!
Was the cup cake delicious? We love cake (of any description) here!

What a beautiful day! I too find that when PC declares she sees something, if I look close enough or long enough I finally see it too. Eagle eyes!

Sweet. I love that both you and the bird were taking care of your littles together.
